Head stone of Isham R. Holt b.
1819 in Cumberland Co., KY. Isham moved his family
to NM in 1879. They passed through Las Vegas, NM.
On the way to Alma, NM, crossed the Rio Grande just
above Socorro. The Rio Grande was then known as the
Great River and the crossing was known as the
Spanish Crossing. 1885 New Mexico State Census Isham
Holt and family living in Alma, NM next door to his
daughter and son-in-law Langford Johnson and Allie
Holt Johnson. Just North of Pleasanton, you will
see Holt Gulch and Holt Mtn. to the East.
In the fall of 1892, Isham and Lydia moved to
Mesilla so that Alfred, Elgin, Walter and Valeria
could attend A & M College. Alfred was the first
graduate of the school of mining. Alfred went on to
do post graduate work in Michigan. He returned to
Las Cruces where he died in 1901 of Typhoid Fever.
1900 Fed Census, Isham Holt and family living in Las
Cruces, NM Isham Holt died in Las Cruces in 1902. He
is buried in the
Masonic Cemetery Cemetery in Las Cruces, NM along
with his wife Lydia Ryan Holt and son Alfred Holt.
Additional pictures are of the Alma Cemetery. Large
head stone is for Dr. George Way. He delivered my
grandmother and most of her
siblings. My grandmother's oldest brother Marvel
Johnson was shot and killed in 1896 by a drunken
ranch hand from the WS ranch. Wil Riley shot from
the saloon into a group of young boys playing in the
street. Marvel is buried next to Dr. Way. Janice
